Snapchat Purges Over 400,000 Underage Accounts in Australia as Social Media Ban Takes Hold

SYDNEY – In a massive crackdown following Australia’s landmark social media legislation, Snapchat has suspended more than 415,000 accounts belonging to users under the age of 16. The move comes less than two months after the country implemented a world-first ban, forcing tech giants to purge underage users or face staggering fines.

Despite the sweeping action, Snapchat officials are raising red flags over the effectiveness of current age-verification technology. In a recent statement, the company revealed that their detection tools—which estimate age based on facial analysis and usage patterns—carry a significant margin of error, typically between two and three years.

“In practice, this means that while some under-16s may still find ways to bypass these safeguards, other users over the age of 16 are being unfairly locked out of their accounts,” the company noted, highlighting the technical “gray zones” of the enforcement.

A Call for Structural Change

Rather than placing the entire burden on individual platforms, Snapchat is lobbying the Australian government to shift age verification “upstream.” The platform proposes that app stores (such as Apple’s App Store and Google Play) should verify a user’s age before an app is even downloaded.

The company argues that a centralized system at the device level would be more accurate and harder to circumvent than the current fragmented approach.

The Global Domino Effect

Australia’s aggressive stance, which threatens platforms with fines of up to A$49.5 million for non-compliance, is already triggering a global shift:

  • France: The National Assembly recently voted in favor of a similar ban for those under 15, aiming for full implementation by January 1, 2027.

  • India: Authorities have begun exploring similar legislative frameworks to restrict social media access for minors.

As platforms like TikTok, Meta, and YouTube scramble to align with these new laws, the digital landscape for teenagers is undergoing its most significant transformation since the dawn of the social media era.
